Squash Batch Image Resizer

Squash is a lightweight fast batch image resizer. I could end the article here because the previous sentenced is a good summary of what Squash is able to do. Add multiple images to Squash, select a new size for them, and click on Resize images. That’s the process in detail.

Technology blog
It’s possible to specify a destination directory for the resized images, add a suffix to the filename - something like thumb or small would do - and if you want to overwrite existing images in that directory.

There is no preview of the output images, no information on file size, no choice of file extension. As I said it’s lightweight and does only one thing at the moment. I still like Squash because it is easy to use, mainly because of the missing options of course.

Squash is available for Windows and Linux. [via Genbeta]

iPhone SDK Beta 2 - time to make things look good

The major addition that the second beta of the iPhone SDK brings is the Interface Builder. This nifty little tool will allow you to drag and drop in order to build the user interface for your application.iPhone SDK Beta 2
Tools like that make it on par with languages such as Visual Basic which make building new apps fast, easy, and convenient. Granted, using the drag and drop method may not give you the appearance you really want, but using it to complete a large portion of the code for you, and then changing the way things look a bit is a lot easier than trying to reinvent the wheel every time you write a new app.

Apple also added in some new sample code and updated the documentation that comes with the SDK. Sadly there isn’t a simple update option for the new SDK, you actually have to go get it yourself, but it’s still free. Apple is also still reported to be limiting access to the App Store and still limiting the participation in the $99 iPhone Dev Program.

Apple has supposedly ordered another 10 million iPhones - I want mine delivered now

According to an analyst at Gartner, Apple has ordered a second batch of 10 million 3G iPhones to be delivered. That’s a total of 10 million regular iPhones and 10 million 3G iPhones that Apple is apparently hoping to sell by the end of this year.

Mobile review
Speculation by the same analyst was that the new 3G iPhone would use an OLED display which would net it a thinner design and a longer battery life. The switch to OLED would make sense, some would say that it would help make up the difference in battery that 3G would drain, but we already know that several system on a chip designs that include 3G are out there that are at the same level of power usage as the iPhone’s current chipset, such as the one from Broadcom which would have brought several other new features as well.

As far as the thinner design goes, that would have its potential up and down sides, if it was so thing it was as thin as the iPod Touch, then all those accessories/cases would work, but if it was thinner, or not quite that thin, but thinner than an iPhone, you’d have to have a whole new set of cases/accessories developed which would suck for manufacturers and consumers alike. I don’t really care though, I just want my damned 3G iPhone pronto!

Windows Mobile 6.1 coming for you on April Fools Day

Do you remember that semi-formal roadmap we saw not too long ago that pretty much stated that Microsoft had seen the error of their mobile ways and with 6.1 they were going to fix a lot of things and make a move towards higher useability? Well I don’t know if that’s come true or not, but word is that we’ll find out on April 1st.

Windows Mobile 6.1
Supposedly April 1st is the release date for the new version of Windows Mobile which is rumored to include a newer, better, web browser that allows for zoom and scrolling with ease. It also will offer up a more Vista-like UI, copy/paste from IE, new fonts, a task manage more similar to its desktop siblings, WiFi indicator, and auto-configure in ActiveSync for your email.

So, its not an entirely new OS like some think Windows Mobile handhelds need, but it’s a major step in the right direction and should definitely make at least a few things more intuitive, if not user friendly. I have no idea if they’ll try and charge for the minor revision update or not, but I’d guess not. Now all we need to do is get Sony Ericsson to push out that XPERIA X1 with this new OS, which could happen since CTIA starts on April first as well

LG Electronics’ cellphone label CYON on Tuesday launched a new 3G-capable HSDPA phone for the Korean market. More common functionality comes in the form of Bluetooth connectivity, a 2-megapixel camera, MP3 playback, and video conversation capabilities, among others. LG lists the suggested price at below 400,000KRW, or about $400.

Yahoo! Buzz Publishers Get Highest Site Traffic Ever!

What happens when your blog story gets featured on the front page of Yahoo! Get prepared for the highest site traffic ever. As Yahoo! Buzz is getting a revamp , some lucky publishers are getting an opportunity to join as Yahoo! Buzz Publishers and drive huge unbelievable traffic to their sites with pageviews being limited by how much load the web hosting server can handle…

Salon.com announced that it hit over 1 million uniques in one day for the first time in the company’s 12-year history, a traffic milestone reached when Yahoo! linked from its home page. Techcrunch reports that they received their highest traffic day ever with over 1,000 comments on the post, which almost brought the site down.

Yahoo is still ramping up the number of links it puts on the home page from Buzz, and is being careful about the potential to flat out nuke websites with all the traffic they can send. But it’s clear that a link from Yahoo.com blows away anything Digg or any other competitor can offer. That will keep the Buzz publishers, who must be invited into the service, paying attention.

How does Yahoo Buzz send you huge traffic?
Yahoo! Buzz features the most interesting stories and videos on the Web and the content is ranked based on votes, search-term popularity, and what people are reading and emailing that instant. Yahoo Buzz does not use holding story pages on their site, but rather directly links to the story page boosting traffic to your site to read the full story. You can promote the story further by adding a vote button. Selected Top Buzz content may be featured on the Yahoo! homepage too!

Yahoo! informs that the current beta test is limited to a small set of select publishers to ensure they can evolve the program in a way that is most beneficial for a good user experience. They will be accepting new publishers soon and you can join the mailing list for updates.

Can your web server survive 1 million hits?

This is way beyond the number of visitors Digg or Fark can send your way. Most sites hosted on shared webhosting will not be able to handle such traffic even for minutes, so I guess they will be joining in top websites and blogs on dedicated servers initially who can handle the traffic. Do you prefer your few thousand daily visitors, or rather have a crashed site everyday…Thanks to quicktips

Extract, Record and Download MP3 from YouTube and raaga.com

Sometimes you may wish to extract the mp3 audio from a video in YouTube, Yahoo Videos, Metacafe, ifilm or some songs sharing sites like raaga.com. Here is a work around to extract and record audio from flash videos and to download mp3 playing sites.

First of all you need to install FreeCoder Toolbar for your browser.

Then, click the settings button in the FreeCoder Toolbar and then select your preferred recording drivers and the location where recorded mp3 to be saved.

download audio file
Then just goto your favorite video or mp3 playing site and press record button in the toolbar to record when the song starts playing.

download audio file
Once the playing is completed press stop button on the toolbar to stop recording then you will have your recorded mp3 audio copy in the location specified in the Freecoder toolbar settings.

MIU HDPC - tries for James Bond, hits somewhere around The Tick

Hardware wise this thing is amazing featuring a VIA C7M ULV CPU running at 1GHz, 4GB of RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth, and your choice of a 60GB HDD or a 4GB SSD. Where it starts to fail is in respect to design, I guess what I'm trying to say here is that it's ugly.

It even has a cool feature where it can dual boot WinXP and your choice of WinCE 5.0 or Linux Qplus. There are two screens; the larger of the two is an 800×480 4-inch touchscreen which hides underneath it a mouse controller and a QWERTY keyboard.

The multi-functionality of this device still make it a smart purchase as long as the appearance of your mobile device isn’t much of an issue with you, it sizes in at 163×67x24.5mm. Suggested uses are as follows: CarPC, GPS, Cell Phone, PMP, UMPC, E-Dictionary, VoIP device, PSP rival, Digital Camera, Voice Recorder, or even mobile TV with the optional DMB tuner attachment. There are some features that we don’t know about at this moment, namely what cellular networks it works on, but we do know it does connect to some of them, word is that we’ll be able to buy on in July, in Korea, for about $498.

“The HTC Dream Android phone is said to measure 3-inches wide by 5-inches long and feature a full QWERTY keypad that either slides out or swivels.” If the HTC Dream is indeed the first handset to be running Google’s Android, we would expect it to have tremendous specs - making Android look good.

Google Search plugin for Windows Mobile

Google Search plugin for Windows Mobile
After the success of the Google Search homescreen plugin for S60 handsets - which Vincent described as making “a big difference” to handset usability - the search company has announced a similar app for Windows Mobile handsets.

Google has now brought its home screen search application to the WinMo platform, noting on its blog that it has discovered that S60 and BlackBerry users with the app installed are able to get to Google search results about 40 percent quicker than those without — and they search 20 percent more. Makes sense, considering the pain involved with loading the browser, navigating to a favorite (or even worse, typing in google.com by hand) and tapping your feet for a few seconds. The plug-in is available immediately.

Hands On with iPhone 2.0 - new changes abound like Spring cleaning

Engadget has gotten their hands on iPhone firmware version 2.0. Some of the new features include a scientific calculator when you turn your iPhone sideways with the calculator open and the previously announced Exchange support is as smooth as it should be.

Hands On with iPhone 2.0
There isn’t a contacts search function, although they proposed that it might be because they don’t have too terribly many contacts, so it might require a contact least of more length for that feature to kick in. There is also no two pane mail client (mail list in one, message in the other).

The app store was there though, even though all it did was error code out saying that it couldn’t connect. There were also a couple of button icon changes, including the calculator button and the iTunes Store button. Other than that, nothing really important to see here, I’m just really, really hoping that Firmware 2.0 lands on Hardware 2.0 with a new shiny 3G chipset, I know other users are pushing for a whole list of other new hardware features, and those would be nice, but just a new 3G chipset would make me happy.

Flash Coming to iPhone one way or another

Well, they may not have quite said it like that, but, they did say that they've taken a look at the iPhone SDK and they believe that they can use just the SDK to get Flash on the iPhone. Sure they'd much rather work directly with Apple on this matter and make sure Flash gets fully integrated, but they've more or less said that one way or the other, Flash will be built for the iPhone.Flash Coming to iPhone
Now, since Steve and his fiends control the pearly gates of entrance into the iPhone Developer Program, and the distribution of Apps, if Apple is dead set on Flash not reaching the iPhone, then it may still not make it to the iPhone. Just because Adobe comes up with a version of Flash for the iPhone doesn’t mean it will be added to the iPhone App Store.

I hope that Apple at the very least allows them to peddle their wares in the App Store, optimally Apple will cave and finally start working with Adobe, and it will be a great partnership, but maybe not. However with all the other apps that will be coming out for the iPhone one might wonder if anyone will care about Flash support for the iPhone. I think part of the thing with Apple not wanting Flash on the iPhone is the sheer amount of data that is transferred by Flash applications, I mean on WiFi networks that’s fine, but over EDGE it would either be too slow to be enjoyable or would majorly irk ATT.

What is SEO

Search engine tipsWhat is seo? Seo is all about helping the search engines to crawl your site better and give them the best of your site. This requires a lot of things to be done. We will try to post some of the valuable search engine optimization information here.

Blogs and websites get success by achieving a huge traffic. So how do we actually get traffic? For this there are many factors to it. We will try to put up some of the factors here:

1) Google page rank, higher the page rank the better it is. Page rank starts from 0 and goes to 10. page rank 4-6 should be considered decent. Google pagerank is found in the google toolbar. Though it is not all that accurate, so perhaps checking the pr from data centers are a better idea.

2) Backlinks are important, but geting backlinka involves a lot of work.

3) Unique content and fresh content.

If you get backlinks and fresh content, google page rank will go up, so let’s talk about the backlinks first. These are a few methods to get backlinks,

1) Article submission : it is one of the easiest ways to get backlinks. Just write a quality article, and submit it to as many article submission websites as you can. And add your website’s link in the article. This is how you get easy and free backlinks. Remember to check the page rank, as higher page rank article submission sites, are the best to get some quality backlinks. Remember this is contextual links, so this traffic is absolutely targeted, so it is adviced to write articles of the same category as the link in it.

2) Directory submission : I don’t recommend the free directories, as there are too many links. If you go for the free directories, then don't submit all in one day, do it slowly so that the search engines don't detect a lot of links at once! Too many links are link farms and it can get your site blacklisted by google and other search engines. Try the paid directories, must be pr3+ else it is pretty much waste of time. Some of my favorites are alive, aviva, v7n, gii etc!

3) Link exchange : this is another free method, but don’t do this too much. Find high pagerank websites, that are of the same category of your website. Then do link exchange with them. Do this with caution, and remember not to have more than 5% of your incomming links from link exchange, else it will hurt the rankings.

4) Buy links : well, one of the most easiest ways of getting quality backlink is buying links. You need to be careful to buy link, try getting links from pr4+ sites and get it from the home page. This is the best way, as you get quality one sided links. But then matt's recent blogs are a bit against it, so perhaps doing this safely will be a lot better. Don't put paid links or sponsored links in your sites. Do not actively sell or buy links.

You must optimize your keywords also. So for that, whenever you buy links or do link exchange, use your most important keyword to hiperlink your URL. This way your keywords importance in the search engines will increase. This is known as anchor text optimization. It is the best Seo technique.

Meta tags are very important, keep proper Meta tags in the head of your web site, following Meta tags much be present in your pages if you want to get higher rank and better traffic from the search engines:

1) Keywords = must be around 120-150 characters long. 50% of your keywords and key phrases must be on your web site’s content, else it will be considered as keyword spamming. This is not the most important meta tags, these days search engines are more or less ignoring the keywords, so am repeating, that please don’t put up keywords that are not part of your page’s content.

2) Description: this is a very important Meta tags, when the site’s don’t have much contents, the meta description is used by the search engines to determine what type of site it is. This one must be around 150-175 characters, not more than that.

3) Title : this is the most important Meta tag. Title is the main reason why a site dose good in search engines and why a site dose not. A title tag must not be more than 50-60 characters. Try not putting up anything other than text in the title’s field. Also it is very important to put up your most important keyword in the title. Avoid special symbols, and if you want to put two keywords or key phrases in the title use this symbol “ ” between them.

These little things make huge difference for your search engine rankings and search engine traffic. Seo is all about helping the search engines, not finding way to cheat it. Try making nice websites, so that you visitors like them, and come back whenever they want more information.

Then next point is unique content and fresh content. These are two things that are very much necessary to make a successful site. You need quality unique content, and then you need to add these contents everyday. You can bring search engines crawlers by a lot of methods, but then only if you have quality unique content then your site will have better position in the search engines. High page rank and lot’s more depends on the content. So start writing and write, as often you want. Perhaps this is one of the major reasons that blogs works better than most websites.

If you are on the blogger try the feeds. Feeds are one of the best way to bring more people to read your content. The rss and xml feeds are pretty common these days. Blogger feeds are atom.xml and it works great. Use feedburner.com to get the most out of your feeds. Just get a free account there, add your site's feed in the feed burner, after that make some add to "my google" and "my yahoo" buttons, that's it! just add those buttons on your site, easy!

Social networking is one of the best ways to drive a huge traffic to your websites or blogs, but then it dosenot really help to much from the seo point of view, as the nofollow tags are available with the link on those sites. But then am getting over a few thousand hits from the social network sites, so it is worth a try, most of all, it is all free!

del.icio.us, stumbleupon, digg, furl etc are a few of these!

A quick link building tips :

Start giving comments on blogs, there are some of the famous blogs with huge pr, and traffic, though the nofollow tags might be there, but then it is still good to go for a try. Just add a link with the comment!

Forum signatures are a nice way to make traffic, good for backlinks.

Downloading Vista Service Pack 1

Downloading Vista ServiceI’m currently waiting for Windows Update to finish downloading and installing Windows Vista Service Pack 1. While it has been around for a few days, it was only today that Windows Update prompted me to download it.

I have to admit that ever since getting this rig June of last year, Windows Vista has severely crashed on me just a couple of times. And both times, slapping on the installer DVD during the startup and restoring a restore point did the job. There are a few quirks that I could really bitch about with Vista but so far, it’s getting the job done. Not that this means something. Since by my experience, Windows XP has done a much better job and I’m confident that even Linux would serve my computing needs well.

Anyway, this thing is supposed to contain a chock-full of goodies and improvements. I am holding my breath even if I know I shouldn’t be waiting for any pleasant surprises but I half-expect installing this thing would fuck things up for me. So before I hit OK on Windows Update, I made sure that everything has been backed up.

Check out the overview here.

The world’s most expensive iPhone

iPhone diamondsAustrian luxury designer and jeweler Peter Aloisson has something more to add to his kitty – ladies and gentlemen, presenting to you the Aloisson designed iPhone – the world’s most expensive iPhone. The phone derives its name from the Princess cut used on 138 of the 318 diamonds on its surface. The rest of the 180 diamonds on the phone are brilliant cut and it has 17.75 carats of diamonds set in 18k white gold around its rim. All diamonds used are of the best quality.
iPhone diamondsThis iPhone Princess Plus has a price tag of €120,000 ($176,400 USD) its first customer is a Russian businessman who had pre-ordered it way back in October 2007 for January 2008 delivery. And if you can’t afford this, the poorer lot can buy the iPhone set only with brilliant-cut diamonds. This can be purchased for the more “modest sum” of €45,000 ($66,150 USD).

10 Most Hated Features Of A Blog

I am giving the list of 10 most hated features of a website or blog that may be responsible for the less traffic.

Popups — pop ups are widely used in websites or blogs to advertise new products and to get extra impressions, clicks for them. But the visitors find them very annoying. Remember the google policy “You can make money without doing evil.”. So it’s better not to use popups in your blog or website.

Redirection –URL redirection should be avoided as far as possible. The user feel cheated when he clicks any url and he redirects to completely different content or site.

Blog Community Widgets — I personally don’t like the community widgets provided by blog communities like mybloglog.com or blogcatalog.com. They increase the timing of the page loading and also diverts the attention of the user from your site.

Different Design for subfolders — Suppose you are running a community portal. It has forums, blogs, chat rooms, photo gallery. You are using different scripts for them and they are installed in different sub-folders. I know it is difficult to use same theme, look and feel and design for them but at least you should try to keep at least the same logo and background for all the modules.

Dark Colors in theme or background. — Avoid use of dark colors, they are only better for porn and gambling sites. For instance, every product of google is using light colors as they better for eyes and on such sites with light colors user can spend maximum of his time.

Page Loading — Loading of the page should be very fast so that user should not wait and watch for your content to load. It is very essential for the success of any site. I can give you example of google, it’s search results are not much different from that of other search engines but the thing that matters is the fast results that google gives on searching any keyword. Clean your pages removing large picture (especially .bmp files), video, flash etc files.

Banner ads — Unnecessary banner ads diverts the attention of the user from your website. So do not use banners ads more than 1 or 2.

Small text or improper font — The font size should be standard i.e medium. It should not be too large or too small. Also, the background color should be completely different from the font color.

Difficult Navigation and menus– The purpose of page navigation is to give users a way to keep track of their location within programs or documents. Page navigation should be dynamic and show the path that the user has taken to arrive at a page. Always try to give important links in the menu, don’t flood your menu with unwanted and external links. It is a bad practice.

Unnecessary use of technical jargons — People are getting confused and don’t want to deal when website developers use to geeky language, technical terms etc. So it’s better to keep the language of the site as simple as possible so that even a layman can understand. Simple and clear language should be used for writing blog articles.

Apple transparent trackpad patent suggests clamshell iPhone

Apple iphoneApple has developed a technique that could allow for a smaller iPhone with all the controls but half the size, according to a recent but not yet fully public US Patent Office filing. Described as a “dual sided trackpad,” the primary variant on the invention would have a translucent cover with a capacitive, multi-touch trackpad that accepts input on either side and can activate controls depending on the pad’s position.

The pad could therefore be attached to a small handheld device through a hinge and switch its functionality depending on whether it was open or closed: while a closed trackpad would simply serve as a substitute for the main touchscreen, an open position could provide a separate pad for dialing numbers or an interface for gestures and scrolling. This touchscreen could have its own basic display for these features.
Apple iphoneA second iteration of the patent could also apply to computers and would have the dual trackpad replace the conventional, opaque surface on a notebook such as the MacBook Air; while acting as a traditional trackpad when the computer is open, a fully shut notebook would switch input to the outside and use it as an external interactive display for checking e-mail, playing music, and other simple actions, similar to Windows Vista’s SideShow.

Sony Ericsson W580i gets a new color - Jungle Green

Sony Ericsson W580iLast year Sony Ericsson show their pink version of W580, the Sony Ericsson W580i Walkman phone is now available in a new and fresher color — jungle green.

That means you can now get the W580i in white, black, grey, pink and green. Personally, I’m not sure that white is my color, so I’d be more likely to pick the staid black version, but if you need to camouflage your music-phone while trekking through the Amazon rainforests, the Jungle Green W580i might be the one for you.

HTC patenting unique dual-mode slider

HTC mobileHTC has developed a technology for slider phones that could make them both more useful and more elegant, according to a new US patent filing. Rather than rely on either dual sliders (as with the Helio Ocean) or other complicated designs, the prototype would include a unique keyboard plate and slider track that would allow users to shift the LCD from calling to text modes without significantly impacting the size of the phone.

LG enV2 spotted in press shots

LG VX9100LG’s direct sequel to the enV messaging phone has been officially uncovered and suppled with more details. Previously known just as the VX9100, the sequel is likely to be called just the enV2 in public and will have a simpler look than the original (known as the VX9900) with only a small external LCD.

The new version should also switch to a smaller, standardized USB connection for charging and synchronizing instead of a custom connector. The new version will also ship initially in a maroon in addition to the black that marked the debut of the original, and will adopt a newer hinge design that resembles more recent notebook computers. The previous leak pointed to a 2-megapixel camera (up from 1.3) as well as a microSD slot visible in the new photos.

LG VX9100No release dates are attached to the shots, though the virtually finished state of the phone that would allow press images suggests the phone is within weeks of its official launch.

iPhone firmware 2.0 has already been jailbroken

With the new 2.0 firmware coming out for the iPhone in July, I’ve been wondering how long it will take for someone to jailbreak it. Surely it will only be a matter of a few days after it is released to the masses, right? Nope, it has already been done months before the update is rolled out.iPhone firmware 2.0The iPhone Dev Team apparently got ahold of the new firmware and has already worked their voodoo on it. They have already announced that it is working for hacked activation, which means they’ve still got some work to do for those that are using iPhones on the AT&T network.

This of course makes me wonder if Apple has gotten lax with their security measures or if the iPhone Dev Team is just getting that good. I’d probably put my money on the latter.

MP3 Attachments in Email Can Be Spam

MP3 AttachmentsEmail spammers are using MP3 attachments to bypass the anti-spam filters. Spammers are taking advantage of the fact that the MP3 format is one of the most common in use today and that most anti-spam solutions do not handle attachments very well because they do not actually analyze the attachment content.

It’s a short, 30-second MP3 file recorded at low bit-rate with a synthetic female voice promoting a particular stock; the voice heavily distorted to avoid signature-based anti-spam approaches.

To address the MP3 spam threat administrators need to deploy as many anti-spam techniques as possible, including Bayesian filtering, while at the same time maintaining a very low level of false positives. Additionally, administrators can block attachments or place restrictions on allowable sizes to weed out unwanted material.
