iPass Provides Wi-Fi Connectivity for Windows Mobile 6 Devices; iPhone and Blackberry Support Planned

iPass today announced service availability for Windows Mobile 6 devices. There is now an integrated at-a-glance Yahoo screen and improved oneSearch feature along with a comely Web 2.0-like feel and navigation to the application. All the data is stored in a “cloud” for easy retrieval on any other web-enabled device and since this would mean heavy data transfers, it would help if you had an unlimited data plan.

Yahoo! to OutSource VoIP Calls to Jajah

JAJAH has been selected by Yahoo! as the outsource partner for its premium voice service. The “Phone In” and “Phone Out” service will enable consumers to make low-cost PC-to-phone and phone-to-PC voice calls over the JAJAH network using Yahoo! Messenger.

The partnership leverages JAJAH’s open, next-generation communications platform to support the existing Yahoo! Messenger voice offering beginning in the third quarter of this year.

“This partnership with JAJAH will help Yahoo! continue to provide a great communication experience to our millions of Yahoo! Messenger users,” said Sabrina Ellis, vice president of Yahoo! Messenger. “Yahoo! It is important to select the IFO file, rather than VOB file, because the IFO file contains the information about the entire DVD structure and this way you will avoid audio and video de-synch problems when converting. Also, most DVDs have several VOB files (files with actual video)and if you convert VOBs instead of IFO, you will have to merge them afterwards, which is not the case with the IFO files.

Step 2: Set up the conversion parameters

After you have selected the video input file, click one of the following buttons placed along the top of the interface:

- To AVI for creating video for PC, Archos, Creative Zen Vision, and YouTube, MySpace and Google Video services;
- To DVD for burning a DVD or saving video in DVD format on the PC;
- To MP4 for Apple iPod, Sony PSP, Epson P-2000/4000 or mobile phones with MPEG 4 video support;
- To 3GP for mobile phones with 3GPP and 3GP2 video support;
- To MPEG for for burning a SVCD/VCD or saving video in MPEG format on the PC;
- To MOV for Quick Time player;
- To WMV for Pocket PCs running under Mobile Windows OS, like HP iPaq and portable players: Archos and Creative Zen Vision;
- To RM for Real Media player;
- To SWF for Adobe Flash player.

In the list of Profiles (... Profile) select one of the preset profiles.
You can also click Edit Profile button to manually set the profile parameters.

Step 3: Set up a proper video output file path

Click the Browse... button next to Output File Name field and select a location on your HDD for the output video file.

NOTE! When you select a location for your output video file, you should save the file to your personal computer HDD.

Step 4: Convert your files

After you have set up all the conversion parameters, hit the Convert Now! button to start converting.
You can visually judge the DVD conversion process if you hit the Advanced>> button twice.

Skype Releases Beta Version of Skype for Mobile

Today Skype released a beta version of Skype for mobile phone, works on about 50 of the most popular Java-enabled mobile phones from Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson. The beta version of Skype mobile is available worldwide with a feature set that includes chat, group chat, presence (seeing when your contacts are online), and receiving calls from Skype users, and through SkypeIn.

Skype-to-Skype and SkypeOut calls from the mobile handsets are initially supported in seven markets: Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

“These are still the early days for making Skype calls on mobile phones, but we’ve already made great strides in this space,” said Gareth O’Loughlin, general manager, mobile and hardware devices. “Among other things, we have a great relationship with 3, the mobile operator, which has brought the mobile Skype experience to eight markets through the 3 Skypephone and a range of other packages and phones. Skype for your mobile will expand the available options even further.

With its beta version, Skype for your mobile enters a public testing phase that will help Skype gauge the response of technology-savvy users whose feedback will help tweak the offering. This phase is expected to last several months, after which a public version of the application will be made available to millions of mobile phone owners around the world.

There are two ways to get the beta version of Skype for your mobile: as a direct over-the-air download to a compatible mobile phone, or it can be downloaded to a computer and then transferred to the phone. WeatherBug Releases Widget for S60 Phones

WeatherBug announced the WeatherBug S60 widget today for select Nokia devices. WeatherBug’s S60 widget will utilize Nokia’s latest Web Runtime Technology (WRT) to bring local weather info to your phone.

The WeatherBug S60 widget will be available from http://weatherbug.com/ and via the Nokia Download! store and nokia.mobi site. Nokia also plans to pre-install WeatherBug on select Nokia devices; enabling the widget to be easily accessible with a single click from the S60 idle screen or applications menu.

The WeatherBug S60 widget includes live, local weather information for more than 50,000 locations worldwide and is local language supported for all regions. Detailed views of the seven day forecast, radar and satellite imagery, and camera images from WeatherBug’s proprietary weather network are also available on the S60 mobile widget.

The WeatherBug widget will be supported by advertising sold by both the Nokia and WeatherBug sales organizations.

AT&T Offers BlackBerry Professional Software

AT&T and Research in Motion announced today the availability of BlackBerry Professional Software for AT&T’s small business customers, which provides a wireless communications and collaboration solution with advanced security features.

BlackBerry Professional Software provides a simplified installation process and the full suite of advanced security features and IT policies that come with the BlackBerry Enterprise Server software. With pre-defined IT policies, it is also easy to control content protection strength from content on the handset, owner-information settings, password use, password complexity, timeouts and more. A lost or stolen smartphone can be locked down, and proprietary business information can be erased immediately.

BlackBerry Professional Software also provides control over the company’s BlackBerry smartphones, allowing the owner or office manager to limit certain features on an employee’s smartphone, and the solution enables data to be backed up wirelessly. Changes to control settings can occur in seconds as IT policies are “pushed” to the smartphone over the air.

The BlackBerry Professional Software package that supports five wireless users out of the box is priced at $499, with a 10-user version priced at $849. These packages include the server software along with CALs. Additional CALs can be purchased individually, in five-packs and in 10-packs to grow the deployment as the small business grows.

Sprint Announces Windows Mobile 6.1 Upgrades Planned for Current Smartphones

Sprint plans to upgrade several of its current Windows Mobile smartphones later this year to support Windows Mobile 6.1 announced today by Microsoft. Windows Mobile 6.1, an update release, will bring customers core platform enhancements in the areas of user-focused experience, messaging and productivity.


In the summer of 2008, Sprint will offer software upgrades for all existing Sprint Windows Mobile 6 smartphones, including:

* Samsung ACE
* Moto Q9c by Motorola
* Touch by HTC
* Mogul by HTC

In addition, all of Sprint’s new Windows Mobile smartphones launching in the second half of 2008 will offer Windows Mobile 6.1 software, including a new Palm Treo launching later this year. Additional details will be announced upon commercial availability.

Windows Mobile 6.1 will bring new time-saving features, easier phone navigation and management, and stronger security safeguards. To further enhance the user experience, this update allows device makers to change some of the look and feel of the interface to create more customization. As part of the 6.1 upgrade, handsets will also support enterprise-class device security management through Microsoft’s System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008 server.

Squash Batch Image Resizer

Squash is a lightweight fast batch image resizer. I could end the article here because the previous sentenced is a good summary of what Squash is able to do. Add multiple images to Squash, select a new size for them, and click on Resize images. That’s the process in detail.


It’s possible to specify a destination directory for the resized images, add a suffix to the filename - something like thumb or small would do - and if you want to overwrite existing images in that directory.

There is no preview of the output images, no information on file size, no choice of file extension. As I said it’s lightweight and does only one thing at the moment. I still like Squash because it is easy to use, mainly because of the missing options of course.

iPhone SDK Beta 2 - time to make things look good

The major addition that the second beta of the iPhone SDK brings is the Interface Builder. This nifty little tool will allow you to drag and drop in order to build the user interface for your application.
Tools like that make it on par with languages such as Visual Basic which make building new apps fast, easy, and convenient. Granted, using the drag and drop method may not give you the appearance you really want, but using it to complete a large portion of the code for you, and then changing the way things look a bit is a lot easier than trying to reinvent the wheel every time you write a new app.

Apple also added in some new sample code and updated the documentation that comes with the SDK. Sadly there isn’t a simple update option for the new SDK, you actually have to go get it yourself, but it’s still free. Apple is also still reported to be limiting access to the App Store and still limiting the participation in the $99 iPhone Dev Program.

Windows Mobile 6.1 coming for you on April Fools Day

Do you remember that semi-formal roadmap we saw not too long ago that pretty much stated that Microsoft had seen the error of their mobile ways and with 6.1 they were going to fix a lot of things and make a move towards higher useability? Well I don’t know if that’s come true or not, but word is that we’ll find out on April 1st.


Supposedly April 1st is the release date for the new version of Windows Mobile which is rumored to include a newer, better, web browser that allows for zoom and scrolling with ease. It also will offer up a more Vista-like UI, copy/paste from IE, new fonts, a task manage more similar to its desktop siblings, WiFi indicator, and auto-configure in ActiveSync for your email.

So, its not an entirely new OS like some think Windows Mobile handhelds need, but it’s a major step in the right direction and should definitely make at least a few things more intuitive, if not user friendly. I have no idea if they’ll try and charge for the minor revision update or not, but I’d guess not. Now all we need to do is get Sony Ericsson to push out that XPERIA X1 with this new OS, which could happen since CTIA starts on April first as well

What is Autoruns?

Autoruns shows you what programs are configured to run during system start up or login, and shows you the entries in the order Windows processes them.

You can choose to disable and enable back which program is necessary to run together with system to save your RAM (memory). For me services like apple software updater, adobe updater and other update service is unnecessary. Another similar program is process explorer.
